What's Your Get Ahead Number? (And Why Most People Never Know It)
"I just want to get ahead."
I've heard that sentence more times than I can count.
Maybe you've said it.
Maybe you've thought about it this week.
Here's what I've started wondering.
What does that actually mean?
Seriously.
If I sat across the table from you after one of my webinars and asked, "What would getting ahead look like?" What would you say?
Would you need another raise?
Would it be paying off the house?
A million-dollar 401(k)?
A certain net worth?
Or would you stop for a minute because you've never really defined it?
I've noticed something after serving more than 10,000 families.
Almost everyone can tell me what they make.
Most can tell me what they owe.
Many can even tell me what their retirement account is worth.
Very few can tell me what it would actually take to feel free.
That's interesting to me.
Because if you don't know what "ahead" looks like, how do you know if you're getting closer?
Maybe that's why so many hardworking people feel stuck.
Five years go by.
Your income grows.
Your retirement account grows.
Your house is worth more than it was.
And somehow... you still feel like you're waiting for life to begin.
Have you ever asked yourself why?
Why does it feel like every year you're making progress on paper...
...but not in your life?
Why does another raise feel good for about three months?
Then life keeps on life’ing.
The next tax bill.
The next unexpected repair.
The next unplanned for expense.
And you're right back where you started.
If that's been your experience, maybe the problem isn't you.
Maybe you've just been chasing a finish line that keeps moving.
What if nothing changes over the next three years?
You keep doing exactly what you're doing today.
You’re disciplined. You’re responsible. You keep making good money.
You keep contributing to retirement and getting the match.
You keep paying the mortgage on time.
You keep hoping that someday you'll finally feel like you've arrived.
Three years from now, would you honestly feel ahead?
Or would you simply have a few bigger numbers on a statement?
I've been asking myself that question a lot lately.
Because I've met people with seven-figure net worths who still couldn't walk away from their paycheck.
Why?
Because they are the engine.
The day they stop working, everything else starts slowing down
I've met business owners who looked incredibly successful on paper but couldn't take six months off if they wanted to.
I've met many 401K millionaires and people who had accumulated wealth...
...but not freedom.
Those aren't the same thing.
I think we've been measuring the wrong finish line.
What if getting ahead has nothing to do with the size of your nest egg?
What if it has everything to do with one number you've probably never calculated?
I Call It Your Get Ahead Number.
Your Get Ahead Number isn't what is in your 401(k).
It's the amount of monthly cash flow it would take to cover every one of your monthly expenses...
...plus one dollar.
Enough monthly cash flow to pay for your life.
Not your neighbor's.
Not the guy on Instagram standing next to a Lambo.
Yours.
Every bill.
Every month.
Plus one dollar.
That's it.
Because the day your assets produce enough income to pay every bill before you ever earn another paycheck, something changes.
You go to work because you want to.
Not because you have to.
That's a completely different life.
Once you know that number, every financial decision starts looking different.
Instead of asking, "How much could this investment make?"
You start asking, "Does this move me closer to replacing my paycheck?"
That's also why I believe every family needs a foundation of accessible capital.
A properly designed high cash value whole life policy isn't there to replace your business, your real estate, or your investments. It's there to give you a place to build capital you control while the rest of your financial system works toward producing the cash flow that eventually buys back your time.
I've found that the families who experience the most freedom aren't always the ones making the most money.
They're the ones who know exactly what they're building toward. The successful families have defined their destination.
So let me ask you the same question I ask almost every family I meet.
If work becomes optional tomorrow...
Would your current financial system be ready?
If you don't know the answer, that's where the conversation starts.
